Do you have uncontrollable diabetes? Are you experiencing an unbearable burning sensation in the soles of your feet? Do your feet feel as if they are being stabbed with pins and needles? Do your feet feel numb? Have you begun to develop foot ulcers? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you may have Diabetic Neuropathic Pain (DNP).
Diabetic Neuropathic Pain
● Diabetic neuropathy, nerve pain that begins in the soles of the feet and radiates up the extremities, is triggered by uncontrolled diabetes.
● The most common form of diabetic neuropathy is peripheral neuropathy that initially occurs in the lower extremities.
● Patients tend to experience a gradual onset of burning, numbness, tingling, and pins and needle sensations in their legs and feet.
● Over time, the sensations will ascend past their knees and into their hands.
● The best treatment for DNP is a lifestyle change that consists of eating healthier meals (non-processed foods) and exercising daily.
● In the meantime, either Gabapentin or Lyrica is effective in managing neuropathic pain.
● Please follow up with your primary care physician or general practitioner for insulin management and proper lab assessments.
